My name is Clara Hart, and I’m a 37-year-old home-grown chef from Portland, Oregon. I didn’t grow up surrounded by professional chefs. My earliest food memories are of my mom turning leftovers into surprisingly good casseroles and my dad insisting he could “improve” every recipe with extra garlic. Those small, messy, loving moments around food are what first made me feel at home in a kitchen.
I started cooking more seriously in high school, mostly because I wanted dinners that tasted better than whatever I could microwave in four minutes. I ruined my fair share of pans and set off the smoke alarm more times than I’ll ever fully admit, but every mistake felt like a hint that I was learning something new. I never went to culinary school—my education came from library cookbooks, borrowed magazines, late-night cooking shows, and the kind of stubborn curiosity that keeps you trying even when your first attempt looks nothing like the picture.
These days, I cook from my bright, slightly chaotic little kitchen filled with jars of spices I’ve collected over the years, stacks of mismatched bowls, and wooden spoons so worn they almost feel soft. My mission has always been simple: make cooking welcoming. I don’t believe great food needs fancy equipment or long ingredient lists. It just needs a bit of patience, a little confidence, and permission to enjoy the process—even the messy parts. Some of my favorite recipes were born from experiments I didn’t intend to make.
I want beginners to know that the kitchen isn’t a test you pass—it’s a place you grow into. If you’re willing to taste as you go and laugh when things don’t turn out perfectly, you’re already more of a cook than you think.
